IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP WITH WILLOW WONDER AND ALANA RANCOURT PHINNEY

Wednesdays 10-11:30 AM, April 28-May 26
Location: Contemporary Dance & Fitness Studio, 18 Langdon St. in large airy studio allowing physical distance, CDFS follows all protocols, masks required.

WORKSHOP INCLUDES:

  • Guided warm ups and movement investigations using improvisational scores

  • Opportunities to tune up our kinesthetic sense as soloists and develop synchronicity as a group

  • Awakening our sense of spontaneity and building trust between participants

  • Alternating instructors each week with both present on the 5th week

  • Building community through dance


​BIOS
Willow Wonder has been teaching, performing and choreographing for over 20 years in Vermont. She is classically trained and holds a BFA in Modern Dance Performance from SUNY Purchase. She has delved deeply in the practice of improvisation, and has studied with renowned teachers such as Nancy Stark Smith, Neil Greenberg, Chris Aiken, and Polly Motley. Currently, she is on faculty at CDFS and teaches Pilates at Essential Physical Therapy and Pilates. Her passion is sharing and investigating the deep wisdom of the human body.

Alana Rancourt Phinney is a dance artist and passionate improviser. She has trained extensively in the art of composing in the moment. As a facilitator, she aims to offer a unique invitation to play that puts trust in emergent forms. Alana believes dance is for community, not just for the trained dancer; when we move together, we build community. Alana holds an MFA from Smith College in Massachusetts.

One thing the pandemic has revealed is that we can dance TOGETHER despite our distance using Zoom. In my own practice, I have found NEW ways to look at the space (mental and physical) in my home and make room to breath and play with intention; to be BODY-FULL.

Join me in the investigation of preparing to be ready (in process of blooming) using emergent improvisation and letting the body tell the story, like Park Dancing from home. We will move from our floor or chair or from wherever feels comfortable on that day - perhaps from our mind's BODY-FULL eye.

EMERGENT DANCE: TUNING INTO COLLECTIVE EFFERVESCENCE
STAR ISLAND RETREAT, JUNE 2021 (VIRTUAL OFFERING TBD)

Alana was invited to lead a week-long workshop on Star Island in 2020. Due to COVID-19, the program has been postponed until summer of 2021. More details to come on a virtual offering to Star Arts conferees!

In this workshop, we will become familiar with our dancing selves as individuals, within a group, and in a broader context as art makers of the world. Using Alana's Park Dancing format, we will awaken our sense of play and TUNE IN to our somatic senses, and make a "dance that matters." ~Anna Halprin

NATURAL MOVEMENT AND VOICE EXPLORATION

One-on-one and small group sessions for ages 10-15. This work is focused on creating time and a safe space for young people to discover their own movement qualities, pace and rhythms, and voice engagement - singing and speaking. Through improvisation and learning techniques, students will gain knowledge about their inherent instrument, which can be applied in theater, music, social settings, public speaking, and being human!
